One of the errors of God’s people that the Bible keeps pointing out is how they have played the harlot before Him. God appeared to be irritated that His people could not commit to Him and instead chose to be bound to many other gods.
But God requires total commitment to Himself. "NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME", He says. While we seem to be intrigued by all the unimportant things that rather attract us, He keeps calling to us, saying, "When would you quit being a harlot?"
Clearly, God sees our commitment to other things aside from Himself as harlotry.
You may say, "But I don’t worship other gods. How can I be a harlot or, better still, an idolater?” However, whatever you place ahead of God becomes a god. When other things matter to us more, they become gods to us, and God detests them.
When others or our work become more important to us than God, they become idols to us. Whatever competes with God for your attention is an idol.
It seems to be very important to the Lord that we give Him exclusive commitment. The first of the commandments He gave to the people of Israel warned them not to have other gods before the Lord God of their fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
Giving your all
"I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me" Exodus 20:2-3.
God has never been pleased with people who cannot be faithful. He delights in those who can stick to one spouse, one God, etc. Prove that you’re faithful to the Lord by committing yourself totally to Him and cherishing Him more than you cherish others.
While God gives us the freedom to serve Him willingly, He also expects nothing to become more important to us than He is to us. In order to be sure that we have no other gods before the Lord, we must not be attached to the possessions we have, and our relationships with other people should not be more important to us than our relationship with Him.
One way to prove that we value a person is that we talk to them and we do not make them feel like they do not exist. When we forget that the Holy Spirit is around and thus we do not talk to Him every day, we do not prove our value for Him.
God requires complete devotion to Himself. He calls you to take the bold step of putting Him first. "NO OTHER GODS BEFORE ME", He calls out to you.
